Jim’s practice is primarily devoted to the defense of medical malpractice cases. Since joining RFBN in 1987, he has tried numerous medical malpractice cases and defended several physicians in hearings before the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. He has also tried cases involving vehicle-related injuries, property damage, premises liability, construction accidents and claims of legal malpractice. Jim began his career with the firm of George F. Barrett, where he tried over 70 lawsuits to verdict, including more than 25 jury trials. From 1970 through 1972, Jim was with the firm of Hubbard, Hubbard, O’Brien and Hall. He served for 14 years as in-house counsel for a major national insurance company and has defended individual corporations and municipalities in civil litigation.

Professional Work
Jim has successfully argued in the Appellate and Supreme Courts of Illinois. In a notable Appellate Court case, he represented a hospital in a decision defining and protecting the attorney-client privilege as it applies to representation of a corporate employee (Buckman v. Columbus-Cabrini Medical Center). Jim has had an outstanding success ratio in the Circuit Court, winning over 90% of the major cases he has tried. Jim was an Instructor in the law of Contracts at Prairie State College from 1978-80. He served as a Captain in the United States Army Reserves from 1966-72.
